The premium 2009 Volvo S40 comes as a 4-door sedan and as a wagon called the V50. Both models share some of their basic design with the Mazda 3.The 2009 Volvo S40 is a premium compact sedan available in three trim levels: 2.4i, T5 R-design and sporty T5 R-Design trims, named after their individual powertrains. The R-Design nomenclature is new for 2009. For 2009, Volvo S40 receives some new features and is no longer available with a manual transmission.
The 2.4i comes with a 2.4-liter inline-5 rated for 168 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque, with either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic. The T5 R-Design gets a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-5 that makes 227 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Front and all-wheel-drive T5 models come with a 5-speed automatic only. EPA's revised testing for 2009, rates the S40's fuel economy at 20 mpg city and 28 highways on the 2.4i; 19 and 28 mpg on the T5; and 18 and 26 mpg on the T5 AWD R.
